Friday Favourites - Please be seated

I love looking at the creative ways that brides and grooms or party hosts are coming up with to the seat their guests at their events - it seems so much nicer than just a list at the door.  Here are some lovely examples of a great way to show your guest to their seat - have you seen anything wonderful at an event you have been to lately?

It is a long weekend here in our part of the world so we are off for a few days up the coast - will be back mid next week.  Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Little moments that made me...smile...this week

This week we have had sickness in the air...so it has been a quiet week.
A week of sleep and pretending,  sand play in the garden, baking, reading, drawing and cuddles It's nice to remember those little moments in the week.
The moments that pass in the blink of an eye, but make me so very happy.

Sometimes it really is the simple things...my new book $5 thrifted at a local fair (i don't think it had ever been opened)! Just flicking through the pages and seeing it on my side board in the kitchen has made me smile.

A pasta and patty cake necklace made awhile ago...we found it, played with it and found a nice place to display it. Such happy colours and special art such as this displayed in the house is a nice reminder of the fun things we do together.

Oh, my vintage Christmas tin thrifted at a garage sale on Sunday whilst driving home from the beach. It was $2 and will be perfect to hold all my special Christmas decorations.
I love it and really can't stop thinking about Christmas and all the fun festive activities that go with it.

Craft and drawing...one of our favorite afternoon activities.

Left over pasta in the garden...the flowers are blooming and those cute little legs with boots and big boy pants on...oh, so very sweet.

Friday also makes us smile...2 full days with daddy and tomorrow is our wedding anniversary.
We will spend the day just the three of us, a yummy breakfast  and the early sitting at our local Thai restaurant with our little one.

Things I learned this week including that it's possible to be too stylin'

We're off on holiyays this weekend! A whole week of... well... much the same really. But in a fabulously fun and new location (more on this on Sunday). And I don't have to go into the office, so that's well worth celebrating!! Look out for some fabulous guest posts here in Maxabellaland next week, all writing on the theme of 'what my children taught me about myself'. I can't wait.

This week I learned a few things worth noting...

1. It is possible to be too stylin'. As much as I eagerly anticipated the launch of Fleur Wood's Food Fashion Friends ( I love all three of these things!) , on closer inspection I found it to be oh-so-very over-styled, forced and pretentious. The thought of sitting down to dinner with those fabulous... ah... well... wankers put me right off my food. Did I miss something? Perhaps it's a diet manual?

2. Finance types really do seem to think that we can predict the future with all this 'forecasting' business they insist on. Scoff, life is too short to plan, my friend, I may live like a gypsy but I don't carry a crystal ball. Sorry, what was that? You're paying me good money to know how to do a budget forecast? Oh. I'm right on top of that, Rose!?

3. I care about the fate of the Bali Nine. I appreciate that drugs kill and what they did was illegal and that they knew the punishment before they committed the crime. I know that. But the thought of these young people being gunned down by a firing squad makes me want to curl up in a ball and weep for the loneliness of a life half lived.

4. I don't like spending nights away from home for work (I almost wrote 'on business' but I didn't want to join Fleur's wanky gang). I sort of knew this already, but here I am in Melbourne, away from my family and I'm missing them so very much. Which is a shame as I know I should appreciate the fact that my job gives me a night away here and there to myself... but indeed when it all comes down to it, the Missing seems to be far more important than the Myself.

5. Under no circumstances should you put more than two Eclipse mints in your mouth at the same time. Danger, I repeat, danger. I can still hardly talk my mouth was that numb. (I notice a few of you heading off to find the Eclipse mints... danger, danger! Oh, does no-one ever listen to me!?)

Did you learn anything new this week? Have you ever been a bit too zealous with the mints and lived to regret it?

It's a special day today!!

Feux Pas Friday... episode 1

so... I'm thinking, what better way to lead into each weekend than by poking a little fun at myself? The thing is; I'm a straight-shootin, tell-it-like-it-is, speak before I think kinda gal. There is often an awkward silence after I have spoken, and many of my antics demonstrate my crude lack of graduation (or enrolment, for that matter) to ladies finishing school. I figure this ought to provide easy fodder for a little light entertainment at my own expense each week. You know, keep me humble. And stuff.

This week, I didn't even open my mouth to commit my feux pas. It happened yesterday afternoon, when I was doing a cameo at work for the first time since Elliott was born. We own a retail business, hubby and I, and I try to turn up every now and again to frighten the staff do very important tasks. While my father minded Fern, I took bubby-o and ventured into the store. After bundling Elliott up in the pram, I parked him in a quiet corner and headed for my office. I must have sat down for - oh - 3 seconds when he started wailing. Damn! Elliott is the world's most placid baby, but he wasn't having a bar of it. Funny - because Fern never did, either! With resignation, I gathered him up and breast-fed him in one arm, while I worked with the other.

When it came time to leave, I ventured back out into the store. There were a few customers about, and I stopped to have a little chat with one, who is also a friend of Dan's. I then nodded politely to the other customers and asked one of Dan's new employees to assist with a task. Exuding professionalism, I sashayed out to my car. Job done!

But just as I was giving myself straps for my fine working example, I happened to glance down. The entire top section of my shirt was open, exposing the finery of my soggy pink maternity bra... heck, in my haste to finish the feed I hadn't even clipped the bra back up! Sigh. How I have stooped from my pre-baby corporate days...

Quick - have YOU committed a feux pas this week?? If you havn't -- its never too late! Have a great weekend... x

Fat-Free Cakes and Donuts!!

Looking for ways to brighten up your little one's play kitchen? I sure am! We scored this one from Ikea and we love it! But, with Fern still a wayward toddler, I can't really have anything that is breakable... or, that when dropped/ thrown or banged will destroy something of mine! So, I've been on the hunt for fun things that are practical as well as stylish! And, I think I've found the answer - check out these adorable, knitted items I've discovered from Lark. Each item is knitted by hand from natural cotton by women in rural Bangladesh, under fair trade conditions. And I think I love just about every item in the range, which also includes some gorgeous softies... the knitted goodies are so divine I want to gobble them up... and indeed I might - - they won't put a dent in either my purse OR my waistline!

Here are my picks, starting with the floral tea set which just might have to make a cameo in Fern's Christmas stocking... if she plays her cards right!

Pink Spotty Floral Tea Set $69.95

Knitted Cookies Play Set $35

Pink Birthday Cupcake $9.95

Knitted Doughnuts Play Set $35

Vanilla Icecream Rattle $14.95

... and for the boy-o in your life? Look no further than the Toolbelt Rattle Set  - $35: (I think Elliott might need one of these in HIS Christmas stocking!)

Ms Nosybella: Do you really...?

Lovely ladies and gents (LOML, Dad, Glen... you know who you are, fellas*)

I'll cut to the chase this week. I just want to know your answers to two personal hygiene questions and then I'll be on my way. Don't fret, not tooooo personal.

1. Do you really put sunscreen on yourself / your children every single day?

Because I don't. I kid myself that I have issues with the chemical content on young skin (and possibly I do) but the real reason is that I hate the greasy, sticky, smelly feeling it gives you all day. It's like walking around with a latex glove plastered to your face.

Plus I'm desperately lazy.

I just tell the tsunamis to stay out of the sun as much as possible, to cover up and to wear their hats. I do the same for me.  I confess I may have smirked just a little bit when I read about Aussie kids with Vitamin D deficiency. There'll be none of that around here, thank you very much.**

2. Do you really moisturise top to toe every day?

Because I don't. See 'desperately lazy' above. I do my face, neck and décolletage (see, gone all fancy pants on you there...) every night, but I just couldn't be arsed (don't worry, it didn't last) to do the full body thing. Every week or so I feel guilty and slather myself in the stuff for days in a row and then I slacken off again. Skin seems okay.

So, I guess I really want to know if you take better care of yourself than I do of me...

'Til next time
