Friday Favourites - Backdrops

I am always on the lookout for interesting backdrops - a backdrop can add so much to a function whether it is a wedding, a party or a dessert table. They add character and tell a story. They can make a doorway look exciting or a tree look interesting.

Here is a lovely collection which includes everything from flowers to bunting to ribbon to bottles.

Pictures of 'You'...

Have you noticed that babies and children love to see pictures of themselves? When Fern was a baby and I was looking at ways of distracting her out of a trying mood, I'd wander with her around the house pointing out photos of family members by name.

"That's Poppy, and that's Nanny and look, that's you when you were born!"

Nowadays of course, Fern can point to the pictures herself and takes great delight in pointing out people she loves.

Me: Who's that?
Fern: Nanny!

Me: Yes! And who's that?
Fern: Poppy!

Me: Yes! And who's that?
Fern: You!

Well, yes.......

Have a lovely weekend... xo

Things I learned this week including that you have to follow the rules

Happy Friyay! How was your week? It's such a cliche but time and time again I find myself wondering how we got to the end so quickly. Apart from the year I spent in a one hour meeting on Monday, this week has flown.

1. So, you may recall that I didn't refrigerate my Hyacinth bulbs and back in May I smugly just stuck them in the ground anyway? Well, they came up and I was very excited (and smug) but then they didn't flower. So, I've learnt my lesson, you have to follow the rules.

2. Mel from From Little Things has come up with a way to make a mundane household chore like hanging out the clothes just a little tiny bit more inspirational. On the subject of inspirational cleaning, am I also the only one who buys top-of-the-range organically birthed cleaning products just to make myself feel better about scrubbing those floors?

3. My "reply" post this week taught me that it's very easy to appear harsher in print than if you said the same things in person. I apologise to Kahli if I upset her in any way, that was certainly not my intention. On reflection, I'm not proud of the personal tone that my argument took. I embrace all honest versions of motherhood and I never wish to be disrespectful or hurtful. I would rather hurt myself. I intend to be gentler with my criticisms in future. You have been warmed. (Sorry about the stupid pun, I can't help myself - I always make stupid jokes when I'm upset.)

4. A helmet-cam video of a transmission tower repair technician enlightened me to the fact that they free-climb a 1,768 foot tower in order to repair its light beacon (to give you an indication of how far up these guys work, the light beacon is there so airplanes won't fly into the tower...). Warning, the video is actually mind numbingly boring, in an interesting kind of way.

5. To write the number '5' correctly we say 'draw his body and his tummy and don't forget his hat'.

6. I really, really like that Dita von Teese.

7. I found a mummy crafty blog out there called Sean the Prawn. Aside from me telling you that it's a really great little blog, you have to check it out on the name alone, right? I just love it!

8. If I'm Still Here is an elaborate practical joke, I've been laughing along with it all for months. Can't wait to see it.

9. I found this article on oh dee doh Incorporating Children Into the Decor hi.larious. I pictured children hung neatly on the walls besides the Jackson Pollocks. I don't even recall thinking that an odd thing. Let's face it, these 'showroom' houses must hang their kids up on the walls in order to be so styled and clean. (For the purpose of remaining critical and scathing, we'll just ignore the fact that my home has already 'incorporated' most of these ideas, okay?)

10. The 'bag tag' I bought from Loved (Little Ted Canvas's gorgeous brand) makes a fabulous over sized pendant. I gathered compliments all day when I wore my sweet Alice in Wonderland version (it has Alice and the squirrel on the front and the white rabbit checking his fob on the back). Of course, there was one smarty pants who asked me if I was wearing a handy coaster around my neck, but there's always a comedienne, huh?

How was your week? Did you learn anything new to share?

* PS - Of course I'm flogging over at Lori's. Just a note on this, I have actually tried a few other 'Follows' and while I have met some really wonderful bloggers this way, for the most part I've found they really are just about getting 'follows' which I find a bit meaningless really. Why follow a blog just to get a follower on your own blog? Am I missing something? In contrast, Flog Your Blog Friday has really interesting, thoughtful blogs that I love visiting and being a part of their community. After months of being 'part of the gang' I really feel like we are a little club of Friday (and other day) friends. New company is always welcome and you don't have to **FOLLOW BACK!** unless you really want to. Just saying.

A Sad Day turned to Smiles

Today hasn't been a very good day. I just woke up after only 4 hours sleep feeling blugh! A guy I used to go to school with, his little sister tragically took her own life on Sunday. My mum taught her only a couple of years ago and I used to tutor her friends so my heart has just been aching for them and her family all week. It tears me up inside to think that young girls her age are just so sad that they feel they have no other choice but to go. I pray that her family and friends find the strength they need to get through this terrible time! The funeral is tomorrow and I will be thinking of them all, especially my mum, she is quite upset but is being so strong and such an amazing support for all the girls. the teachers and the school community. Today is also 1 year since my Grandpa passed away! I am not sad by this as I know that he is in complete peace up there in heaven. I am sad for my Dad and Grandma though as they miss him dearly. What made me the saddest today was I was doing my works grocery shop and there was an elderly couple outside Coles. She was saying John John are you ok? and he was just staring saying nothing, I walked passed but her frail voice was loud and clear in my mind so I dropped my shopping and went to help her. As I got to her, her poor husband started vomiting everywhere and she was trying to clean it up yet still holding him up. I just held her - I knew she wanted to be there for him so I didn't dare take her away from his side but I helped them both to the doctors surgery to get him in immediate care. When they took him in and his back was facing her she started crying and was so upset my heart just absolutely broke. She was worried about him but was also worried about her shopping so I told her I would take care of it and I would take it to coles and they will put her cold stuff in the fridge. I told her it was all ok and to go be with her John. I didn't go back to see if he was ok. I know I had done all I could. I knew he was in wonderful hands and the dear lady was by his side. That's all that matters! I then headed home to my daily Thursday chores of washing, ironing and cleaning the toy room. No smiles and cuddles and plays from the kids to make me feel better however when folding the washing I came cross these cuties that put a smile on my face...

and then when I was cleaning the toy room I came across this LITTLE classic...

~ beside my phone for size comparison - isn't it just gorgeous ~

A few more 'specials' that made me smile today...

~ Super cute tissue box that can fit in your cup holder ~

~ a little present from Miss 8 from a charity stall at school ~

~ my new wallet ~

~ my dress and bracelets for a wedding on Sat - IMPULSE BUY...woops ~

~ my precious playing in her box (fruit box with a hole cut out) She's like her mumma -
she likes the simple things ~

It started off as a gloomy day and just when I thought I couldn't shake the sad mood I was in I looked beyond the obvious and found beauty in the little things. Such simple things can be so special and definitely made me smile today. It's not always about achieving greatness or excelling in projects or creating a master piece. It's about appreciating those small things that make life grand...especially on days like today!

x S.K.K x

One perfect day......the sea was calm, the sky was blue and a little boy sailed his wooden boat.

I discovered the boat/shelf at at a local bric a brac store...and i had to have it. It was going to be painted white and used as a shelf...until a little inquisitive boy decided to sit in it one Sunday afternoon.

Daddy took out the shelves, painted the inside white, cut out a little fabric sail and gently tied it onto a stick that he also painted white...the little one watched with big blue eyes, smiled and played with his shells and a seed pod.

We found a beautiful spot and he sailed...it was perfect and he loved it!

*the little boat now sits on the porch or in the bedroom...some days it is filled with books other days it gets used as a spot to have a quiet morning snack...it's popular with friends, adults ask where we got it and your lovely comments and emails about the little header have made us smile with happiness. Thank you x
