Oh and this I took just last weekend in my backyard. I was pleasantly surprised to see a pretty pink rose when letting Roxy out. I haven't checked but I'm pretty sure with the freezing temperatures we've gotten this week that it is now dead. Though I'm no plant expert. It could be thriving...

Friday Favourites - Twine

Happy Friday everyone - it has been another busy week here with end of year school concerts.  A busy weekend is coming up for me with four party tables to put together for four very different events - I hope to have lots to share next week.

Christmas is such a wonderful time to use twine in all sorts of ways so this week's Friday Favourites shows some lovely ways to incorporate twine into some lovely projects.

Fern's Pillowcase Dress

This week, I trawled a few of our local op-shops in a bid to find a little bookcase for Fern and Elliott's cubby house. I haven't found anything suitable as yet... but I did pick up a little vintage pillowcase for all of $1 that I turned into a little dress for Fern! It took me all of half an hour to make this dress using the most basic sewing techniques possibly in the history of the world:

A bit of homemade couture, perfect for the party season! I can't help but think Fern looks the absolute sweetest in this dress, made all the sweeter by my knowing I made it for her, with love.

Want to make your own pillowcase dress? There are lots of instructions on the net, like this one. Mine I kinda made up myself as I am not very good at following (or understanding!) instructions. It's literally just a pillowcase, 2 metres of blue ribbon and some cotton! Flushed with my success I think I'll keep my eye out for more fun vintage pillowcases to make dresses with, can a girl ever have too many dresses, I ask you??

Have a great weekend x

flower in her hair

I won my first ever giveaway recently: a gorgeous silk fairy flower headband created by Kelly from Messy Freckle. Another reminder that the blogosphere is a happy little place to dwell.

Gluten free mince pies

Gluten free mince pie by Torie Jayne
Gluten free mince pies (makes 18)

Ingredients
200g (7 ounces) gluten-free plain white flour
1 tsp Xanthan gum
2 tbsp icing sugar (powdered sugar)
75g (2.5 ounces) ground almonds
1 pinch of salt
125g (4.5 ounces) butter
1 large egg, lightly beaten with 1 tbsp water
359 g (12.5 ounces) high quality mincemeat filling
Marzipan
1 tbsp icing sugar (powdered sugar) for dusting

Cooking instructions
  1. Place all the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl, add butter and use your hands to mix until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Or, use a food processor to save a bit of time!
  2. Make a well in the centre of your dry ingredients and add the egg and water.
  3. Combine mixture with a wooden spoon, then knead by hand to form a ball of dough.
  4. Cover with cling film (saran wrap) and place in a refrigerator for at least an hour before continuing.
  5. Roll out marzipan to 5mm thick.
  6. Cut out marzipan snowflakes and leave to one side. If you let your marzipan snowflakes dry for a while, they spread out less whilst cooking and you are left with a clearer looking snowflake
  7. Lightly grease a 12 hole cupcake tin with butter.
  8. Roll out the pastry so it is about 2mm thick.
  9. Cut out circles.
  10. Now line the cupcake tray with pastry, and gently press into each hole.
  11. Spoon a heaped teaspoon of mincemeat into each case.
  12. Place snowflake marzipan on top and lightly press.
  13. Cook in pre-heated oven for 10-15 mins
  14. Take out of tray and leave to cool.
  15. Dust with icing sugar.
