What's For Dinner Tonight!

Most of my family & friends know, I am by NO means a cook. I have come a long way since getting married last year, trying my best to make myself and husband good meals, but I still have a ways to go. Basically, I only like to cook when it turns out good :) And I despise cleaning up food. Anyway, tonight I tried a recipe out of my new Food & Family magazine. It was a grilled chicken & summer vegetable stir fry. Ingredients: red & yellow pepper, chicken breasts (cut into pieces), tomato, white rice, bbq sauce, Italian shredded cheese, garlic cloves, & onion. It was delicious! I took a few pictures, not of the entire process, but you get the gist :)

Aquapalooza Weekend!

~friends-sunshine-boat-warm water-margaritas~
combine together for a fun-filled day

Every year for the past three years I have been fortunate to attend a boat party in Virgina, Aquapalooza. My sister & brother in law have a nice boat and let us ride with them. It is always a great time with good friends. Here are a couple photos from this year!

Sunday afternoon my family & I celebrated my Grandma's 78th birthday at Sakura! It was a great family dinner! One of the highlighted moments was Hayden catching the shrimp his FIRST TRY EVER! He had no help and the chef flung it like normal! He was so proud of himself, too bad I didn't get a picture!

Afterwards we did our grocery shopping then the normal- settle on the couch for a Netflix movie- night. I, myself, have yet to pick out a movie. But hub does a good job. And this movie was suppose to be for me, a comedic love story.

It got a 4/5 star- I honestly don't know how. It was OK, though no 4 star. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice change up from the gun-shooting/bank-robbing/kid-napping movies that are normally on the list :)

Last but certainly not least, a picture from Friday afternoon of two of my handsome nephews!
Aren't they adorable?!
Overall, it was a great weekend. It went by way too fast though!

I love summer!!

When child's play just isn't!

As the Tsunamis are getting older, I've realised how tense I used to be on any given day. I was literally locked up in the shoulders with what I thought was worry about their safety and wellbeing, but now I know was actually worry that they would ask me to play with them.

Really.

I cannot stand most of the baby- toddler kids' games. Oh, I could go a few rounds of shake the rattle, ring o ring o rosey and even a jack was quiet down in his box. And I'm an engineering marvel when it comes to designing and implementing complicated train tracks for Thomas et al. But ask me to peek a boo, read Spot Loves His Mum over and over, build a lego tower or even pretend to be tickle monster and I go to pieces. Yes, I think they are adorably cute at this age, but still it was an effort to engage. I used to grit my teeth and get on with it, fake, overly-happy smile plastered all over my terrified face, but I'm sure the Tsunamis could see right through me.

Have I damaged them for life?

These days they are far more interesting*.  We learn letters, we write, we draw, we paint, we read books with an actual storyline, we play hide and seek. A lot of the time we do our own thing 'together' and they love that too.

As a result, I'm much more settled and happy just being with them. And it's made me realise more than ever that 'it's a marathon, not a sprint'. We first started saying this right about the time Maxi-Taxi came home from the hospital and LOML and I would look at this tiny little thing and say 'soooo, when are his parents coming to pick him up again?' And when things were difficult or confusing or torturous, we'd remind ourselves 'it's a marathon, not a sprint' - hoping that even though we were clearly losing the 'sprint', the marathon was ours for the taking.

We're in this parenting thing for the long haul and there will be times in our children's lives when we're not in our element at all. I found I wasn't a natural 'baby - toddler' parent, but I'm loving the 'pre-school+' parenting. Down the track, I might not love the 'pre-puberty' years, but perhaps the teens and I will gel. You see? It's a marathon and sometimes we've got to dig deep, get the head down and plow ourselves on. Other times we'll be looking around, on a high, enjoying the run.

And, oh, what a run it is!

Are you in your element with the baby/ toddler set? Or are you 'growing' your babies into acceptable play mates like I shamefully do?

* The Badoo is not. She is only two. Luckily her older brother and sister are only too happy to accommodate her dear two year old 'Where's Badoo?' play requirements. Unlike her selfish mother...

Pimping Up my Ikea Purchase

So, yesterday I dragged my husband under much duress down to Ikea. He hates shopping as a rule, so a day at Ikea is really his idea of hell. But Sundays are our 'family' day, the only day we are all home together, and this last Sunday he ditched us to race his bike... so this was payback time!

I needed to buy a chest of drawers for Fern to store her clothes in, and I had a gift voucher generously donated by Ikea when they came to photograph our home in May... gotta love that.

I think I've mentioned in previous posts that Fern is getting a daybed to sleep in once she graduates from her cot. It's sort of vintagey looking, so I wanted to get a chest of drawers to match.

As it turns out, I not only found the perfect piece at Ikea -- it's also on sale!! This is what I bought for just $249 (I didn't get the mirror you see below):

It is really sweet and a bargain at $250, but the handles are a little ho-hum... so I went on a search last night to see whether I could find something a bit more colourful and feminine, and found these on Etsy:
They are hand-cut glass, so shabby-CHIC and perfect for the look I'm creating in Fern's 'big girl' room. And, they're only US$15.50 for 4! I'm just waiting on a price for 6, and then I'm ordering them. Will post pics once I have them! Now, I'm wondering whether I should go one step further and line the drawers in some pretty paper? We'll see...

What Ikea purchased have you 'pimped'?
