And we made it....

through the first year as a family of four that is.

Boy! it flew by!!

Our little Evie is turning one TODAY!! I am supposed to be madly getting ready for her big party we are hosting but have suddenly got a few pangs of sentiment.

So I put together a little movie to celebrate our little ones first year of life.

hanging outside with littles

The other day after work me and little's went outside to enjoy the weather, read her new book, and take some quick photos. The weather has been beautiful lately. I'm slightly worried about the summer being too hot, so I'm soaking it up now just in case :) Addison really loves being out too.

P.S. we have yet to start sleep training. The plan was last night but I went to bed miserably sick and still feel awful. I don't know what's going on this year but I've never been sick this often!

Everything Alice: The Wonderland Book of Makes by Hannah Read-Baldrey & Christine Leech

Homespun Style by Selina Lake

This week I'm reviewing Everything Alice: the Wonderland Book of Makes by Hannah Read-Baldrey & Christine Leech. Hannah is a successful props and fashion stylist whose work has appeared in leading international publications such as Vogue, Elle, Red and Cath Kidston magazine. Christine is a trained illustrator with over 15 years experience designing and art directing magazines, including Buzz, New Woman, Marie Claire, Look and ASOS. Three years ago the avid crafters met whilst working on the newly launched HobbyCraft magazine, and they have been working together ever since. I chose to review this book as I love all things Alice, especially the Mad Hatters Tea Party!

Everything Alice is a super stylish, enchanting collection of fifty craft projects to make, bake and decorate all in the theme of Lewis Carroll's novel, Alice in Wonderland.

The book starts by meeting the creative authors: "This book began as a little idea – a little idea hatched within an ordinary conversation over a cup of tea. We were having a chat – standing at the bottom of a staircase in a location house, which was dressed up for Christmas Day, even though it was July – and simultaneously we both exclaimed, 'How we would love to make a craft book with the theme of Alice In Wonderland.' Everything Alice is our first book (one of many, hopefully...) and we couldn’t be prouder!" They then go on to explore Lewis Carroll's past at Oxford University in the fun form of 'On The Trail of Alice'.

After being given a list of essential items in the form of a 'Craft Kit' and a 'Cookery Kit' the real fun starts with...

Time for tea jewellery, which is a cute selection of charm jewellery you can make out of miniature doll's house furniture and accessories, all with clear explanations. Next up is the handsome dandy white rabbit, complete with bow tie and pocket watch. The book then seamlessly leads the reader through a host of projects to decorate your home and garden, from fabric covered furniture, to Wonderland mobiles and lavender mice. All are interspersed with treats you can bake, like the heavenly lavender-scented Duchess Macaroons and Wonderland cookies, complete with how to make your own cookie cutters and decadent looking red velvet cupcakes. For Alice-inspired parties there are tea set invitations, chic Mad Hatter hats and playing card bunting to name a few. Each of the fifty projects are beautifully photographed and styled with accompanying easy to follow clear instructions and photographed instructions, including templates where necessary.

Everything Alice: the Wonderland Book of Makes is a super practical book brimming with highly effective ideas. At a recommended price of £14.99, I think this book is a must for crafters, bakers and lovers of quirky vintage who admire Alice!

Some of my favourite ideas:

The dandy white rabbit

Vintage cake stand

Red Velvet cupcakes

Wonderland mobile

Please note that my opinions are my own and I am not paid for these reviews (apart from receiving a free book, of course!).

To go with this fabulous book the two lovely authors are running Mad Hatter weekends to teach you first-hand how to make many of the creations from the book, all set in the stunning, award winning Bedruthan spa hotel in Cornwall, England. To find out more please visit Everything Alice.

March 2012

A quieter month of special moments in my world...

yesterday

marked the end of term one
& to celebrate i packed a picnic lunch, change of clothes for my school girl, bathers & towels just in case & we enjoyed making the most of the melbourne sunshine & warmth. it was the perfect way to start relaxing & getting into the groove of the school holidays!

last week we made a list of 'things to do' {like go to the library, ice cream shop, movies} cut them into strips & have placed them in a bowl. on the days we don't have plans already the girls can choose a piece of paper from the bowl & that decides what we will do that day!

what are your hot tips for making the most of the school holidays?

52 Weeks of Grateful: Chit-chat

Last week I was all about the click-clack, this week it's the chit-chat. I am nothing if not musical.

I went out to the launch of the Kidspot Top 50 Bloggers Awards on Wednesday night. It was so kind of them to invite me and I had such a lovely evening meeting bubbly, brilliant, beautiful bloggers (check them out!). I am not a 'shy' person by any stretch of the imagination, but I can be very self-conscious about my larger-than-life personality and appearance. Consequently, heading out to a party is not something I particularly relish, but I so enjoy myself when I'm there.

The thing I find hard at parties is all that small talk. I find small talk really awkward. I was definitely the kid tucked into a dark corner having a 'D&M' at parties, rather than the social butterfly flitting from group to group. Do people 'D&M' in the dark anymore? Ah, the eighties.

But, this week I'm grateful for...

224. Chit-chat - it has it's place after all. How marvellous to share a little moment here and there with so many wonderful bloggers. However, the temptation to launch into a serious discussion about something I had read on their blogs was almost too much to bear!

225. A night out - always nice to smarten up and paint a little merriment on.

226. Flats - every time I venture out in heels, I am always grateful for flats. Why totter painfully when you could run with abandon?

Come over and say 'hi' at Kidspot. 'Cos this week I'm also grateful for music... and particularly singing. Yep, I kinda sing. Kinda.

Join our Grateful community by adding your post to the list below (please add a link back to our list here or at Kidspot). Visit some of the other lovely link-ups - it's a beautiful way to spend a little time. Oh, and it would be lovely if everyone visited a few of the 'late arrivals'  to the list each week... it's sad to be late and not get any love, don't you think?

A Shining Day

It was Friday morning. I had worked a 15 hour day and then only got 3 hours sleep. I was grumpy. I didn't want to get up and I especially didn't want to get up and go straight into work (missing my gym session) to look after 2 boys all day!  As I got to work I opened up Instagram. Instagram always makes me smile. I love seeing all my beautiful friends pictures. It's like a little window into their lives and I love being able to share their journey. Today...well today was different. The picture I saw was on a whole other level. This picture took my breath away.

( Photo taken by 'arronw' )

It hit me. It reached right into my core and made my heart smile. This picture is an absolutely amazing example of pure beauty. If I could describe my life right now, my thoughts, my feelings, my outlook on life...it would be this picture. No matter how grey or gloomy the word may seem you must ALWAYS look for the shinning light. It's there. It is always there. No matter what the situation or how you feel you must always try to let it go, let the light shine and make your heart smile. Thank You Arron! You truly made my day!

 .................................................

Now it's Friday evening and I am home by 7.00pm and EXTREMELY ready for a 4 day weekend!
Check out my view driving home! It was magnificent! Completely magical! A full rainbow and oh so bright!
It's picturesque beauty was there from the city, all the way home! Just that extra little reminder that no matter how grey the skies are there is ALWAYS beauty shinning bright for you!

Have a beautiful weekend everyone!
Keep smiling and searching for that shinning light and rainbow!

Candy Easter Eggs

Candy Easter Eggs

Last year I made candy filled Easter eggs and they went down a treat with the kids when I hid them in the garden as part of my Easter egg hunt. So this year I made them again, but this time filling them with vanilla, bubblegum and blueberry flavoured Jelly Belly beans to match my colour palette.

Candy Easter Eggs, How-to step by step
Making candy filled eggs for Easter

Start by washing and drying the plastic eggs. Then wrap a line of washi tape around the bottom half of the egg top, follow by wrapping a layer of lace tape over the washi tape. Cut ribbon to size and knot ends, thread through hole in top of egg and fill egg with jelly beans or small candy and carefully snap together.

Body Love

I am a big giant ball of excitement right now! Energy is running through my veins, passion is beating through my heart and happiness is shining from my eyes. This year has been a whirl wind. A massive roller coaster that I absolutly can not keep up with! Every month, every week, every day, brings a new set of challenges and accomplishments. Time is flying. It's March already people. How did this happen. Last I remember I was planning for my birthday and getting ready for Christmas. These past few months have flown by and every day has been memorable. Happy memories, sad memories, joyful memories and tough memories, but never the less, memories that will stay with me forever. This has been my first year as a coeliac and my first year dealing with giving up food. Giving up food for me was like giving up a part of myself. Not easy to deal with, but I have gotten through. I have NEVER been on a diet in my life. Now my whole world revolves around this difficult diet. Every meal, every snack and every treat has to be thought about, planned and executed very carefully. I take it seriously because I need to get better. At the start of the year I started running and was loving it sick. Now looking back I realise that My running was my outlet. It crossed my mind once or twice but now I definitely know that it was my outlet. I replaced my eating of gluten and lactose with running. A nice trade in my eyes. Good on ya brain. I didn't do it on purpose. I wasn't consciously thinking, instead of eating this sandwich I'm going to go for a run. It just happened.

Now 3 months later, I have found a new love of exercise! Before this year I didn't get it! I expressed it once or twice in this blog! I didn't get 'gym goers' I didn't get how people live for and loved exercising! Now...I get it! I totally get it. I don't know why? I don't know how? But it's awesome and I love it. I am feeling so much happier and I am seeing results in my body!! My body is toning up by the week and I am getting so many compliments! Not only about my body but that I seem so much happier and brighter!

I love my gym! I love the people, I love the instructors, I love the classes, I love the feel. There is no pressure or competition! We are all there for the same reason...to become fit, healthy and happy! And that my beautiful friends is the awesome journey I am on!

I wasn't going to post this photo but I want to document it! It's part of my journey! It's who I am right now in march 2012! I want to look back and see the changes! I can already see changes and it's only been 3 weeks! I'm not perfect but this is me and I am proud of my body! We as women should be able to look in the mirror and be proud! We should love! I love my body right now! I know it's going to tone up more but I'm happy right now! So here I am! Proud and in love with my body!

The I Wishes can come true

My earlier post about the I Wish Beast went off like a rock (as Cappers would say). It seems we are all a bit prone to letting that beast run riot and get us down.

As so many of you pointed out, it doesn't have to be a bad thing.

I realised after reading all of your thoughtful comments, that I actually need to be taking the 'I Wish' list seriously. I actually need to be wishing harder.

For what is it about 'that girl' that I really wish for? I don't want to be her... I just want to be a better me. A me that is more like the me in my dreams.

So, I have made a list. My 'I Wish' list. No beast in sight.

I wish I could sew
I'm going to sew three little drawstring bags by the end of April using this tutorial and linking up with my all time beautiful clever clogs when I'm done.

I wish I grew some of my own vegetables
I am planting some rocket, watercress and spinach seeds this weekend. You've gotta start somewhere. I'll be checking in with Little Eco Footprints and Down To Earth to keep me grounded (heh, heh).

I wish I was a better photographer
I started Fat Mum Slim's Photo a Day, but on reflection March probably wasn't a great month to start something new. I am going to commit to doing April and I'm getting photography tips here and hoping I can learn by osmosis from this one.

I wish I had better design skills
I'm investing in the Adobe Creative Suite and teaching myself some fantastic new skills using the tutorials at Lynda. Did you know that full-time Australian primary and secondary school students qualify for the student version of this package? I can't wait to get started.

I wish I loved carrots
Remember my list from yesterday's post? Well, I'm going to give up everything on that list for the month of May. Thank god I forgot to put bacon on there...

I have other wishes. More than anyone needs to be going on with. But I'm just going to focus on these five wishes for the next few months and see how I turn out in the end.

What do you wish for and what can you do about it?

Quarterly Top 5

1. Thank you all for your feedback on sleep training. I'm mentally prepping to try again. I know I need to do something or she probably won't sleep the night until she's 3! (So the Dr's say). That would be awful. I just still hate the thought of making her go hungry for hours :/ but I know in the long run it's better for everyone.

2. I have been so behind on everyone's blogs. Between my job, photography (2nd job!), Addison, and trying to keep up with daily routine and chores I literally have zero time! And when I do get a minute I'm always looking for ways to improve my photography- reading, researching, practicing, and looking for inspiration.

3. If you get a minute I'd love if you visited me at my photography site and follow along! If you do- leave me a comment saying you stopped by! Thanks.

4. This quarterly top 5 was way too hard :)

Modern Eclectic Girl's Boudoir...

I am completely in love with this room created by Jemma of Little Eats and winner of the dress I donated to the Cuddle Craft Collective auction that ended last Sunday (which collectively raised over $5000 for a children's feeding centre in Ethiopia -- yayee!) for her little girl, India...

A bright, modern and eclectic mix of patterns, colours, and furniture make this the ideal little girl's room in my book! That chandelier is to die for, and I've been coveting that pom-pom rug for ages and wondering if it might not just be right for Fern's room... loving the collection of artwork and prints and can I mention how flattered I am that that wreath in the centre of the wall is by Bubby Makes Three? It makes my day when I see one of my proudest creations in such a beautiful space!

Thanks for sharing this room, Jemma!
