My Little Coppelia

Having a little girl and sending her to dancing class is pretty much a rite of passage, right?? Within 2 seconds of finding out I was having a girl, I found myself dreaming of the day she would pirouette gracefully into her very first dance class, pink tutu swirling about her feet...

Then I gave birth to Fern. Darling, precious Fern.

Darling, precious Fern, however, has not shown any particular aptitude for dancing. She has a hard time walking in a straight line without tripping over her own feet (as does her mother a lot of the time, to be fair!) and my dreams of her as the lead in Coppelia are fast disintegrating.

Today, I took Fern along to her very first dance class, along with a few others from our original mothers-group. It was ideal -- a casual affair where you pay by the week and where tutus are optional which is just as well, because I only decided to take her yesterday and an old pair of leggings and a tee embellished in sequins saying 'dance' are about all I could come up with at short notice!

The room was packed with little girls (and a couple of brave boys) aged 2-4ish, and when the music started they all jumped and stretched and swayed in tandem with the instructors, little squeals of delight tumbling from their cherub little mouths.

The mums all sat at the back of the room, smiling indulgently at their little ballerinas-to-be, perhaps mentally drafting their submissions to Juilliard in later years.

I excitedly extracted my video camera from my bag and pointed it at Fern, ready to capture the moment that would surely be replayed on So You Think You Can Dance, as the moment where it all begun.

I hit record.

And captured my dear daughter standing still. as. a. statue.

For pretty much the full 45 minutes.

To be fair, there was a moment when she became animated....... they gave her a yellow jelly-snake at the end and she quite liked that.

But otherwise? She just looked totally shell-shocked. Clearly, the other children had all done this before. And most were a little older. They all seemed to know what was coming and what to do. But Fern was so totally out of her element!

Will I take her back? Oh, probably. She didn't cry at least, and that has to be a good thing! And perhaps it's going to take more than one lesson to kickstart that journey to Swan Lake. But gosh darn, what a laugh for the stage-mum-wannabe (that would be me)!

Check it: (Fern is the one standing on the far right in the little ponytail, in case you can't tell!):

Tell me about your child's first dance class... Was it an anticlimax? Or were you dazzled with their grace and poise?! Did you go back?!

Papercrafting is tops

As much as I love making decoratey things, after a while the repetition of making lots and lots of the same thing really starts to grate. Like the 150 cake-toppers I made for the upcoming Kindy Welcome Lunch. I could never be an industry.

Perhaps part of my hohummedness (newly minted adjective there!) is the fact that while I do have a child in Year One and am therefore rightfully welcoming the new Kinder parents to school life  (as is our school's tradition), I am also a Kinder Mum myself so I am technically going to all this trouble to welcome myself.

The things we do.

Do you get involved in this sort of stuff at the school? Do you enjoy it or do you do it because you feel obligated? Would you make 150 kite-themed cake toppers just for fun?

Joining in with the inspirational Kootoyoo's My Creative Space today... one of my favourite things to do in the whole blogiverse. Thanks Kirsty.

wordless wednesday

More Wordless Wednesday fun here.

I'm alive

I swear! I have just taken a break from blogging. There's has been a lot going on in life lately and I need all the extra time I can get.  BUT I do promise to be fully back in action soon- I know I've said this a lot lately but I'm thinking just another week or two. Can you all hang in there until then?! ;)  I really miss catching up on everyone's photos/stories/pregnancies/etc. I'm looking forward to being back in the loop but for now here is a shot I took today of my princess.

Isn't she the cutest with that teddy bear face?! She had a good bath and trim over the weekend thanks to her aunt bird (who happens to be a more severe blog slacker). Though I give her props for helping me clean my entire house this weekend as well because I was feeling under the weather, and she was bored...I guess? ;)

Anyway, besides today my camera has been tucked away for a long time now (insert sad face).
This will change in 2.5 weeks when I will be relaxing with my family here:
Cancun
(Insert happy face).

Be back soon.

Sweet Shot Day

Backdrop Tutorial

For me one of the trickiest parts of putting a dessert table together is finding the correct backdrop.  A great backdrop can really make or break a table.

A few weeks ago I put together a glamourous dessert table for a 13 year old and I have had lots of comments about the backdrop so today I thought I would give you a look at how I put my backdrop together.

The idea for the backdrop originally came from my friend Jessica from Oscar and Ruby - I blogged about her yesterday and showed some pictures of how her backdrop looked.

I used a slightly different method in how I put mine together and it was a great solution that really made the table look very glamourous.

Firstly I purchased a piece of dowel from my local hardware store.  My dowel was 19mm thick.  As my table was 1.8m long I had to get a piece that was 2.4m and cut it down to size.
Next I got together 5 or so different fabrics in co-ordinating colours.  Some of mine were the ones that Jess used in her backdrop and the rest were extra's I picked up from spotlight.
The great thing about this backdrop was that the strips of fabric where quite vintage looking so just ripping them into strips worked a treat.  No being neat, no sewing.
Once I had all my strips of fabric ready I just went along and tied them to the dowel
A piece of ribbon was used so I could hang it on a hook on the wall.
Simple.
And the great thing about this backdrop is that you can easily change the fabric colours to suit another colour scheme.
