6 Months- 1/2 a Year Old!

1FB
  • You are 16lbs 4oz and 26in. 50th percentile for both.
  • Size 3 diapers, 6 months clothes.
  • You are beginning to sit up, and sometimes will for a few minutes (like on a bed) but then you topple over. You prefer to sit up and play now so mommy & daddy need to buy some new toys!
  • You drop your toys on the floor (purposefully) and then look down for them.
  • Everything in sight you assume is yours to mangle and/or eat.
  • You are quite the talker now. You say "blah blah" (just babbling) "na na na" (means you're hungry) "nigh nigh" (means you're tired) and "da da" (Daddy thinks it's for him... we will pretend, but we all know you're gonna say momma first ;)
  • Still have yet to roll from back to belly, but close!DSC_1130-2FBThis method of monthly pictures no longer works. You are too big and you grab the blanket :)
  • You now have TWO teeth! Your first one appeared on Daddy's birthday 2/28, and the second one popped through while on vacation, super fast. I have a picture of you on the second day with barely one tooth- by the end of the week I could clearly see two chompers! And geesh do you drool like c.r.a.z.y. DSC_1144-2FB
  • Mommy put you in your crib for the first time on 3/11. No more bassinet, you outgrew that thing. You did pretty well. But you're still waking up 2-3 times a night to eat, again. Every once in awhile we have a 'good' night which means at least a 6-7 hour stretch. Bedtime is at 8pm, wake up time is 7:30-8am. Doctor said to start sleep training. Which means for a little while we will only do an ounce of formula or just water when you wake up and soothe you back to sleep. Fingers crossed you get used to not eating at night soon. I have a feeling it's going to be a long few days though!DSC_1115B
  • You are still a big cat napper and take usually three to four 35 minute naps a day... though it varies. You will now nap in your play yard or crib which is a big improvement since you used to have to be in your swing or vibrating chair.2FB
  • You eat 4ounces every few hours. You love just about any food and have one meal a day around dinner time- carrots, bananas, squash, apples, pears, peas, you name it, you've probably tried it already. I will either make it fresh for you or just give you a jar. My goal is to at least make 2-3 meals a week though.
  • You did really well in Mexico. Most of the time you slept by the pool in your stroller! You're such an awesome 'on the go' baby, I know you loved taking in all of your surroundings!
  • Speaking of, you also did great on your first flight! You received so many comments from others about how good you were. You slept most of the time on the way down. I was paranoid you'd scream especially since you were sick but you passed right out in my arms as soon as we took off!3FB
Happy 6 months sweetness. Mommy loves you more and more everyday, if that's possible.

Sister's Maternity Shoot

My sister's maternity photos are up on my photography blog! Check it out here!
Wishing I had brought the new camera but I was too afraid I'd drop it in water or something ;) Still got some nice shots though!

Still going through our vacation photos but hope to share a few soon! And a special little girl is 6 months old today, so I need to get her updates on the blog.
6 months

Whew, lots to do :)

Do the cool kids think they're cool?

More school drop offs and pick ups means more time to observe the schoolyard politics. Not a good thing for a paranoid over-thinker like me. Now I'm not just worried about my own children making their way in that murky battlefield we call the playground. Now I'm worried about everyone's kid.

I overheard a group of year 4 girls today discussing who was rostered on to play with Emily. Yes, Emily rosters out her available playtimes. See, apparently Sarah gets to play with Emily on Mondays, Georgie gets her Tuesdays and Julia gets her Wednesdays and Thursdays, but not at recess because Sarah is back on for Thursday recess. I don't know what Emily does on Fridays because Fridays were not discussed.

Part of me loathed Emily on sight (good hair, neat looking, entitled) and part of me felt sorry for her because a forty year old stranger loathed her on sight*. I wanted to go over to that group of year 4 girls and say 'hey, girls. Listen to yourselves! A roster for friendship. What's so great about Emily? Why don't you all play together and leave her out for a change? See how she likes it? Roster her on for no-day, never, no way. Or, if you're not mean and jaded like me, you could just ditch the roster system (which is overly complicated and surely not sustainable) and all just play together. See, you don't ever want to let anyone have that kind of power over you. Don't let them be the one to decide what you're going to do and what you're not going to do. As soon as someone is 'letting' you do something, it's time to run, run for the hills and don't look back, not even to pick up your favourite dolly. You hear me? You listening, girls? Girls?'

Instead, I backed away slowly. It was best for everyone.

I want to know what Emily's got. What makes people flock to one kind of person and not another. Is the charisma thing working for them even in primary school? Does Emily just have more barbie dolls or parents that think that high heels and daisy-dukes are suitable attire for an 11 year old? What is it about Emily? And how can we best deal with her kind? (I can so feel a 'difficult people' post coming on ...)

Every grown up person you talk to who must have been cool for school because they're so hot right now attests to feeling just as left out as the rest of us. Will Emily say something like 'oh, I was popular, but I just never felt like I fit in at primary school... I always just wanted this cool girl called Kate to like me but she wasn't free on Fridays so... you know, that was that...'

Do you think the cool kids think they're cool?
Did / do you know an Emily?

* Of course it was me all along who I really felt sorry for. Don't I have anything better to do than eavesdrop on 11 year old girls and judge them? Don't I?

The Balcony Gardener

The Balcony Gardener
The Balcony Gardener 2012

Today on shops i love I bring you The Balcony Gardener. The Balcony Gardener was set up by Isabelle Palmer after her own experience of owning a small balcony in the city. She believes your own outdoor space, whatever size, should be a special place where you can sit, relax and grow your own little bit of green in the city.

She has put together a wonderful collection of treasures from plants, seeds and window boxes to pots, planters and garden furniture.
I would love the paper pom poms for alfresco parties and, for indoors and outdoors, the quirky bird chandelier and the pretty duck egg blue herb planter pots for my kitchen window sill.

Have a sweet day!
