Point + Shoot : 14

Sunday 16th May 12.20pm*

You know those mornings where you stay up a lot longer than you should the night before and the children seem to know, so they wake up even earlier than usual, then begin whinging before you've barely rolled out of bed and boiled the kettle - Yeah, well this was one of those days.

Thank god hubby's cure for a day like this is to push us all out of the house, to go do something. Most of the time we don't even have a plan before we have jumped on the bikes or driven off in the car - just the way I like it.

Today we ended up finding this amazing French bakery and Fresh Produce Market then stumbled on this cute fella on the way home - Meet Bambam! We tried to steal him but he didn't fit in the car.

Hope you had a great weekend.

Our Ikea Home Shoot - Behind the Scenes!

Well, we've lived to tell the tale of our shoot for Ikea... but only just! Who knew that having your photo taken all day could be so damn exhausting?!

Our day began way earlier than any of us would have liked, with most of the Ikea shoot team arriving by 8am. The first few hours were complete chaotic mayhem, with boxes and packaging and people everywhere. There was a moment of panic as it was realised that several items of furniture had not arrived and a member of the team was dispatched back to the store (over an hour's drive each way!) to pick some of it up.

Dan and I tried our best to simultaneously appear useful and stay out of the way while the team pretty much tore the house apart! Fern's outfit was deemed too Autumnal (the magazine comes out at Christmas) and I hurriedly chose a more 'Summery' number that she wouldn't totally freeze in:

'Autumn' outfit:

Fern's 'Summer' outfit:

The first shots were set up out the back in the courtyard, but the photographer, Prue Ruscoe seemed unhappy with the shadowy light and it was decided we would go down to Wamberal Beach to have our 'family portraits' taken for the magazine while the stylists got everything organised for the rest of the shoot.

We all traipsed down to the beach, where unseasonably massive swells and strong winds posed a challenge to the photographer, who was trying her best to depict an Idyllic Summer day! Fern was an absolute trooper (by now we realised SHE was the real star of the show!) and I think they managed to get some good shots. Here's a little behind-the-scenes peek:

When we arrived back at our place, things were a little calmer... some photos were taken of us out the back, and then the living room and kitchen were photographed.

The courtyard. New Ikea items: seat cushions, metal hurricane lamp, white vases and the 3 coffee tables (which I love!):

The deck. Ikea items: white chairs, metal hurricane lamps, white vase and candle holders, fire pit:

It took ages to get the living room right, but I really love what they did with it! Loving the mixture of lime green, turquoise, white and hot pink. I am also totally loving this Svarva lamp (barely noticeable in this pic on the white TV cabinet), a last minute addition and possibly my favourite piece of the day.
My photos don't really do the room justice, but here's an idea:

Ikea items: the lamp, Strind coffee table, Karljohan side table, Minnen children's table and chair and the black and white cushions.

Here's a pic I took sneakily of some of the team checking the photos:

Fern was exhausted by this point, and I put her down for a little nap. Dan slipped out to buy lunch and we all feasted hungrily on Sushi!

After lunch, photos were taken of my bedroom and when she woke up, of Fern's room also. Louisa the stylist was awesome and made us instantly feel comfortable; it was easy to forgive her for the chaotic intrusion of our home!

I can't wait to see the professional photos and then the magazine at the end of the year. The whole thing still seems sort of surreal and its only the zillion or so Ikea items strewn about the entire house (waaaaaay to exhausted to attempt to clean up tonight) that remind us it even happened. We'll all be going to bed early tonight!

I'll be sure to share the professional photos once I receive some, and I'm sure I'll bore you all stupid with information about the magazine when it comes out!

Overall it was an amazing experience, and I can think of worse ways to spend a Saturday. Now... where am I going to put all the new stuff???

Thanks to Lesley for taking some of the behind-the-scenes pics, and for the yummy cakes!
Thanks also to Ikea for the amazing products, a summary of which I have barely skimmed the surface of in this post!
And to the team today... thanks. It was a blast!!

Have a great rest-of-the-weekend...

fisherman

I always look for interesting things to photograph while popping past the back beach. While the sun was setting today this fisherman was walking back to his bucket to pack up his rod & head home - hopefully with something to cook up for dinner?!

Monster goodness

Hooray! Twenty five little pieces of joy are complete. They are so cute as a gang that it seems a shame to distribute them tomorrow. But distribute we must.

Each softie has the child's name written on a little heart on the back.

Tomorrow we've arranged a treasure hunt with clues from one area of the garden to the other. The last clue directs us to Maxi-Taxi's pocket where there is a note from the monsters letting the children know that they are looking forward to being found and being friends. I'll let you know how this goes post-party!

Mirror mirror on the wall

Multi-faceted mirror by Graham and Green

Recently, I have been going through my magazine tears for kitchen ideas and came across the top image. I adore it! Sadly, we don't have room for a dresser in our house but if we did I would have that one. I love the square marks on the mirror - so distressed and vintage but oh, so glamorous!

For a modern glamorous kitchen you could try mirror wall tiles and for a modern but decadent dressing table, how about the multi-faceted mirror.

Have a sweet day!

Ever Wondered What Your Home Would Look Like...

... if IKEA came to style it for you?

Well folks, my dream becomes a reality tomorrow, when a team including a stylist, art director, photographer and god knows who else descends on Maison Cleary to do just that!

What the hell am I talking about, you ask?

A number of weeks ago, a mate of mine in the UK forwarded me an email he had received from a previous associate who works for a media production company in London. The email said that Ikea was looking for homes to feature in an Ikea customer lifestyle magazine called IKEA FAMILY LIVE (check out this website for an idea of the kind of features in the mag). He said the magazine was "all about showing real people in their real homes - it is still aspirational, giving readers great ideas for their home, but we want to show how people actually live at the same time".

My gorgeous friend put in a good plug for me (he is aware of my hidden obsession with interior design), and next thing I know I was submitting photos of myself, our family and our home. Next, I had to fill in a questionaire describing everything from my decorating style to my unrequited childhood dreams!

And then, I kind of forgot about the whole thing.

I even went to Ikea to buy some stuff we needed.

Then, at about 8pm one Friday night a couple weeks back, the phone rang. It was the media company in London (well, of course it was!) and would I be free for the team to come and shoot the home (and us) on the 15th to feature in the magazine?

Can you even believe this story?

It gets better.

Last weekend, a knock on my door produced a courier who said he had a delivery for me from Ikea! I told him to just "bring it up" and he looked at me kind of strange. I probed him about what it was he had in his van, and he hinted there was more than one item and didn't seem at all keen to bring it up the stairs for me. I sighed and agreed to come take a look in his truck. Once there, I peered inside and asked which bits were for me?

His answer? ALL OF IT.

I've never seen so much Ikea in my life outside of the showroom! Chairs, tables, rugs, prints, lamps, a cot, a play kitchen, coffee tables and god even knew what else just kept on coming! It was like Ikea Christmas!

And the best part? Apparently I get to keep it afterward!

So, it all happens tomorrow and I'll be sure to post a full report straight after! Off now to plan my costume. What to wear that screams casual yet looks amazingly amazing? And what is Ferny going to wear??

Come Sit in Our Garden!

As promised, come and visit our so-close-to-100%-completed-its-not-funny backyard!

I'm super proud of it; for 3.5 years I stared at a patterned concrete wasteland and a few (too many) hedges. Back in October last year, I posted some pics of our new backyard and entertaining areas, but it's taken me another 6 months to get around to properly finishing the job!

Thanks to my unruly Labrador, there were a few unsightly holes in the new garden that I've been meaning to fill with giant rocks. And when we built the deck, the new level presented a slightly larger drop to ground level than we had anticipated and we had been meaning to get around to investing in a sandstone step. Then there was the outdoor sink, which my husband has talked about FOREVER. And so on. Anyway, this week we finally completed all these tasks... and for a good reason!

Wanna peek over my back fence at a few of the new additions?

ps. I've dropped some not so subtle hints about there being a big reason to get the backyard into ship-shape... but think I might hold the suspense out a few more hours. Here's a little clue to get you thinking, and I'll be back with the full story tonight. Maybe.
