Too-close encounters

How are you with mice? Cockroaches? Rats? Louse? Ants? Moths? Fleas? Ticks? Snakes? Spiders?

I ask because in the three plus years we've lived where we live, I've encountered every single one of these pests in my house. Lots and lots of wildlife and that's not even counting the cockatoos, bandicoots, possums and echidnas who are threatening to reclaim our yard for the bush.

I'm a total wimp when it comes to too-close-for-my-liking encounters. I see so much as a cockroach and I can tell you my shrieking gives those pesky cockatoos a run for their money.

But nothing, nothing compares to a funnel-web running over your daughter's hand.

Who knows what a funnel-web was doing hanging around above ground in Winter? But there it was, next to the front verandah, sunning itself on a rock like a black melanoma. Cappers was the one who saw it. She thought it was "one of Maxi's toy spiders" and bent down to pick it up. You talk and you talk and you talk to your children about not touching anything, not sticking fingers in holes or anywhere they can't see them, leaving things well alone. All forgotten in a moment.

The funnel-web leapt into action, stumbled across her hand menacingly before falling unceremoniously off the rock where it lay stunned on the ground below. Clearly this was a funnel-web still mostly in hibernation, drowsy and ineffectual. But, who knew?

We captured it in a jar and even now as I look at it I shudder. Pitch black, ugly, killer. A moment in time that nearly changed time completely.

Do you live in the bush or visit it often?
Have you had a close encounter with Australia's deadly wildlife?

Hotel Chocolat Goody Bag Of The Season review

Hotel Chocolat Goody Bag Of The Season
Goody Bag
Dizzy Pralines
Gemstones
Eton Mess chocolate

I was recently asked to review some chocolate from Hotel Chocolat. Of course, I jumped at the chance! I was so excited on opening the package to find a Goody Bag Of The Season. I tore open the bag to take a closer look. Inside I found a pretty pink strawberry and white chocolate Eton Mess Slab with meringue and strawberry chunks jutting out from the top. Unfortunately, as it contained gluten I had to put it to one side to give to my elder sister, along with the six Billionaire Shortbread chocolates for the same reason. Also inside were six Dizzy pralines, a hard milk chocolate case swirled with white chocolate and filled with a creamy praline centre; these were absolutely delicious. The Smiley Chocolate Lick, a thick chocolate lollipop on a chic black stick, was also really good. The Chocolate Gemstones, little white and dark chocolate infused chocolate beans, melted on my tongue.

Here's what my sister and her family thought of the chocolates.
"We all liked the billionaire shortbread. More of a hit with the ladies. My only criticism was I think the biscuit could have been lighter. We all loved the Eton Mess. Looked great and everyone was excited to try it. The tangy strawberries were gorgeous!!

I loved the Hotel Chocolat Goody Bag Of The Season and think it would make a great gift or great treat!"

Have a sweet day!

what are you grateful for this week?

This week I'm grateful for... the week that was

I started 'Grateful Saturday' in order to take a moment every week to reflect on the things in my life that were positive and appreciated. It's a grounding, important thing in my life and I am convinced that it helps keep me looking for and focusing on life's positives.

I've always done 'three things'. Who knows why three, but three it is.

I've had a HUGE week in blogging land this week. Really awesome support and love coming at me from all angles and I'm positively overwhelmed and so very grateful. Thank you to everyone. I stand behind the fact that I think blogging makes us nicer people. I really do.

It's been so hard to stick to just three things, but, this week I'm grateful for...

145. Companies that 'get it' - Elk, Leona, Prey, I love that you got a random email from some chick with a blog and you ran with it. You didn't try to 'corporatise' me or go on and on about your 'brand'. You didn't have lots of rules and regulations... in fact, you had none. You just got that blogging is about having a conversation with a friend and you pulled up a chair. Are you listening, Ford Territory???

146. Shiny Tim - again. I know. It's boring now. But I'm just so darn grateful for those captured family moments, I really am.

147. Bloggers - Lots and lots and lots of bloggers. I'm probably running out of ways to say I'm grateful for our little community, but again, I am just so happy with the lot of you that I'll repeat myself again and again and again. And again. Thank you for joining in with Grateful Saturday each week. It means a great deal to me.

So, what's making you smile today? Add your I'm Grateful For post to the list below (and please, we love you, but it really does matter that your post is a Grateful one and not just a random), add the button (grab the code from my sidebar and paste it into your post) and pretty-please add a link back to me. Then pop over to visit other bloggers who are spreading a little sunshine.

Welcome to my new series of posts, Friday Feature. This week I am sharing with you the delightful work of stylist, Marie Nichols. After Marie completed her photography degree she discovered her dream job was interior styling. After working at Ideal Home magazine for six years, she left her job of deputy style editor and moved to Sydney where she freelanced for various home magazines.

I love her pretty, whimsical style with touches of glamour, more of which you can see in her portfolio and her blog, Whole lotta lovely, which is full of adorable inspiration.

Happy Friday, sweets!
